A DESIRE

OF PARRHESIA

Michel Foucault developed the concept of parrhesia

as a mode of discourse in which people

express their opinions and ideas frankly and honestly

and honesty, avoiding recourse to manipulation

rhetoric or broad generalisations.

Circumstances

In a conversation in 2008 with a feminist philosopher friend of hers, she explained how sexuality without stakes, in other words the free sharing of pleasure between desiring adults, remains an ‘illusion’ for most women.

In other words, from her point of view, the relationship with the body remains a territory of seduction, of symbolic trade and self-interested exchange with the other, a means that is most often aimed at anything other than the fulfilment of authentic feminine pleasure.

Meetings

Surprised by this assertion and defending the opposite, with the help of writer Elisa Brune, Séroux meets a gigolo who charges a fee for his talents to women seeking a ‘no-stakes’ relationship. The paradox is that the freedom to be - for his clients - is greater than in their marital or relationship sexuality, for example.

On the strength of this shared experience, under the name Max Ghabor, the artist published an advert on the internet to meet people interested in the issue. He listened to them, then photographed and staged the free, anonymous expression of totally authentic and creative feminine desires.

The process

- The announcement was explicit.

- So was the artistic work.

- Each of the people we met, who appreciated the approach, authorised image rights on condition that they remained anonymous.

The same protocol was put in place each time by mutual agreement: the desire of the day was always expressed beforehand by the partner according to the mood of the moment.

The staging was done jointly. Everything was free and unrestricted, and nothing was faked. Afterwards, we debriefed together and repeated the act, varying it according to the mood of the moment.

The collection

This work very quickly met its match. It was the spirit that counted, and the sharing of experiences with those who had given themselves a special escape for a while. The essential part of their lives was obviously elsewhere, even if this exploration often counted for something.

A collection of digital photographs has developed over time. Like Zorah Somexki's collection of found photographs, this is a work in itself.

Elements of it can be found in a tribute to Félicien Rops, with whom Séroux had an almost fraternal relationship.

A QUESTION ARISES

What is the relationship between thought and action, between fantasy and fulfilled desire, between map and territory, between philosophy and life?

Victor Segalen puts it this way in his Imaginaires :

- ‘The work standing, the work separated, - by the accomplishment of its form - from the daily life of the philosopher, what will henceforth be the return influence of this work on life? ’

The idea here was to put to work, physically, an aesthetics of relationship, ‘aesthetics’ meaning the knowledge of that part of splendour that every mind, whether it watches it or not, holds, develops or neglects.

Ghabor's exploration reflects Elisa Brune's curiosity about these issues, which were brought together in this major work in 2012.

Clear and well-written, this collection of surveys explores all the aspects of the subject, particularly the scientific ones, and includes many interviews on the evolution of women's sexuality in France.

Pour la Science - avril 2012

A compendium of the latest discoveries in the field of pleasure...

A phenomenal work that opens up new perspectives on, among other things, how we should re-educate our bodies and minds to finally be able to enjoy them.

Agnès Giard - Les 400 Culs - blog Libération – 30/03/2012

A welcome book that starts with a precise understanding of how the female anatomy works, and continues with a wide range of encounters with gynaecologists, therapists, educators and privileged witnesses of tantric and other practices. A sexual revolution is underway? The proof is in this fascinating book!
