Malick Sidibé was a Malian portrait photographer who died on 14 April 2016 in Bamako, Mali. He was a major figure in contemporary African photography. He opened his studio in the Bagadadji district of Bamako, Mali, in 1962. The studio reached its peak in the 1960s and 1970s. Although Sidibé favoured studio portraits, often commemorating special occasions and capturing clients at their best, he is perhaps best known for his party photographs, which emphasise his way of framing bodies in motion.
