The MANET, RODIN and ROPS tribute sections are not ‘open to all’ like this artist more generally. They contain works of a sexual nature which are likely to shock some people and interest others. If this spirit bothers you, or if your education, your ethics or your sensibilities forbid you, don't go and consult them. This is free formal and philosophical research.
‘All men have a natural desire to know’.
Aristotle says this in the very first sentence of his Metaphysics.
The libido, the desire to know, is the basis of our natural curiosity.
For the philosopher, the desire to learn is natural and begins with the simple act of turning our eyes to take an interest in what's going on.
I hear laughter, I see a crowd, I want to know.
But it is clear that scientific research is not just about rational knowledge, any more than artistic research is about finding new forms of expression:
Art and science are linked to a history of desires and feelings.
The libido sciendi is the desire to know.
The libido sentiendi is the erotic, relational desire.
The libido sciendi is the desire to know.
The libido sentiendi is the erotic, relational desire.
The link between the desire to know - the libido sciendi - and the erotic desire - the libido sentiendi - became explicit from the Renaissance onwards and played a crucial role in the development of modern science and the contemporary arts.
Whether you're a scientist or an artist, the relationships between these inherently desirous beings and other men and women around them are constantly evolving in all areas of creation.
It is these different forms of desire that are at the heart of what is at stake here, beyond the scientist's desire to know and the artist's desire to find at work.
The work of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) after 1900 includes several hundred erotic drawings. In these drawings, Rodin always concentrated on one or two nude models, carefully observing the mysterious region of the vulva. His models agreed to reveal their intimacy to his gaze, often caressing themselves, sometimes reaching the heights of pleasure, allowing the artist to capture the most intimate and expressive movements of their bodies.
