PORTRAITS /

CHARACTERS

A character is a fictional reality, a narrative, a representation. They do not exist in the real world, but are constructed, like all identities. They can therefore give the impression of variable individuality depending on the viewer, and become the object of personal belief.

The concept of posture and sham

A BOOK

Quote

Imposture is a secret affair. The impostor shudders at the thought of others eventually realising what he is - or rather what he is not. Most of the time, others seem to think that we are legitimately occupying our place (indeed, they have invited us to the castle), but in the secrecy of our chimera, we do not believe in this legitimacy, we think that others have made a mistake and we tremble at the thought of being discovered.

By "imposters", Belinda Cannone does not mean confidence tricksters, those who impose or usurp a position.

Rather, she describes a very common feeling that we are always very careful to conceal:

the deep-seated conviction that we are not who we need to be to legitimately occupy the position in which we find ourselves, and the fear of being found out.

While this disorder calls identity into question, it does not raise the question: "Who am I?", but rather: "Am I the person I should be to be in this position? ".

And all our ambitions, whatever their nature (professional, amorous, existential, etc.), can give rise to this concern. In thirty-six light-hearted chapters ranging from literature to psychoanalysis, via cinema, politics and our everyday experiences, this essay offers stories and reflections on the origins and feelings of imposture.
